Ukraine burst onto the world’s stage for all the wrong reasons.
Embroiled in a Russian-led insurrection since 2014, an independent Ukraine limped slowly towards Europe.

Corruption kills, and Ukraine saw its national interests undermined both by Russian actors hollowing out Ukrainian institutions but also by savvy and selfish Ukrainians trying to make a buck. Ukraine stood like a rotted tree, ready to fall in a strong wind, or so it would seem.

When that strong wind arrived on February 24, 2022 in the form of a shock nighttime assault by the forces of the Russian Federation, the Ukrainian president had one response,

“I don’t need a ride. I need bullets.”
